Spring 2005

It’s Yellow Jacket and Wasp Season

Yellow Jackets, wasps and hornets become a serious problem for many people from summer through mid fall. It's at this time that their colonies are the largest they will be, with each nest containing hundreds or thousands of adult wasps. (One unusually large nest recently discovered in Florida measured 12 feet high by 6 feet wide, and contained as many as one million adult wasps!)
With all these mouths to feed, and with other food becoming more scarce for them, yellow Jackets and wasps begin to look more intensely for food. They are more likely to come into contact with us, and this makes them more dangerous.

These insects have very painful stings, although the pain usually is short-lived. However, somewhere between 2- 3% of people have severe allergic reactions to the stings. For these people, a single sting can be life-threatening unless treated immediately.

Unlike bees, yellow Jackets, wasps, and hornets do not lose their stinger. The same insect can sting repeatedly. They also tend to be more aggressive than honey bees when their nest is disturbed.

If you are stung by one of these insects, wash the spot with soap and water, then apply a paste of water plus either baking soda or meat tenderizer, Immediately consult a physician if you are unusually sensitive to the stings.

Small nests of these pests often don't need to be treated. But if you have a large nest, or a nest is located near a doorway or in another place too close to people, or if people in your family are highly allergic to their stings, call us to treat it safely, before anyone is stung.
